Congo has seen a sharp acceleration in Ebola infections since an outbreak was formally declared on May 15 in Ituri province, with the disease subsequently spreading into North Kivu and South Kivu provinces. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported Friday that approximately 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths have been recorded, with at least 82 confirmed cases and seven confirmed fatalities.
Two imported cases involving Congolese nationals have also been identified in neighboring Uganda, which has suspended air travel to and from Congo as a containment measure. No cases have been reported in Rwanda.
The Rwandan government stated that the country remains open and operationally prepared, encouraging residents and visitors to proceed with planned activities while maintaining standard hygiene practices. Authorities confirmed that health screening has been intensified at land border crossings with Congo, with enhanced monitoring underway at Kigali International Airport.
The WHO has classified the outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, as a public health emergency of international concern. Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi called Wednesday for an intensified, multi-sectoral national response, urging all relevant institutions to scale up prevention and public awareness efforts.
