Africa CDC Warns Ten Countries at Risk of Ebola Spread

(MENAFN) The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has warned that ten African countries are currently considered at risk following an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to reports, Africa CDC Director Jean Kaseya said during a virtual briefing that the outbreak poses a regional threat, particularly for neighboring states with cross-border movement and shared health vulnerabilities.

The countries identified as being at risk include Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Angola, Burundi, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Zambia. With the exception of Ethiopia, most of the listed countries share borders with the Democratic Republic of Congo or Uganda, where cases have also been reported.

The Africa CDC, alongside the World Health Organization (WHO), has also launched a funding appeal exceeding $314 million to support containment and response efforts across the region.

Reports indicate that the majority of funding will be directed toward the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda for treatment, surveillance, and prevention measures, while the remaining allocation will support preparedness in other high-risk countries.

Planned interventions include strengthening national emergency response systems, improving cross-border coordination, expanding vaccine research—particularly for the Bundibugyo strain—and pre-positioning medical supplies in vulnerable areas.

The outbreak was declared on May 15 in the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of Congo and has since spread to North Kivu and South Kivu.

According to reports from the World Health Organization, hundreds of suspected cases have been recorded, with dozens of confirmed infections and fatalities as health authorities continue monitoring the situation.
